Simple Sewing Crafts

Ideas for Simple Sewing Crafts

Sewing crafts may sound too complicated or even dangerous to do with small children, but when executed properly it can be a fun activity to do with your kids.  It’s a great way to let them explore their creativity while still making something that can be used practically, for playing, or even just decoration.  Of course, these types of projects require just a little more adult supervision, but kids are sure to have fun working with fabric to make crafts.

Safety

A lot of crafts do call for the use of a needle, thread, and pins, but if you don’t want to use these, fabric glue is an excellent and safer alternative for creative projects.  You can’t substitute fabric glue for a needle and thread all the time, but if you know whether to sew or use fabric glue you can decide what kinds of activities you’d like to do.

Types of Projects

For some types of crafts you can use both fabric glue and traditional sewing, and either prepare the more complicated bits beforehand away from the kids, or use this opportunity to demonstrate basic skills like sewing a hem or a button – skills all kids should learn eventually. Children can then use glue and fabric pens to complete the project, and make the craft their own.  For example, you could make felt finger puppets – there are loads of creative ideas for different characters and levels of complexity.  Simply sew together the basic ‘template’, and then your child or children can glue on different features and eyes using fabric glue, and decorate them as they wish with pens, rhinestones, glitter, and other similar embellishments.

Sewing crafts is also a great way to use up odd scraps of fabric that are too small to serve any other use. Kids can use them to jazz up otherwise plain t-shirts, or to make useful things like simple pencil cases or bags.  Like with the finger puppets, you can assist the kids in sewing the simple template, and let them personalize it with add-ons like buttons or rhinestones.  Depending on the fabric, you could even use glue for the whole project, saving time and difficulty, and keeping sharp objects out of the equation.

Whatever you decide to make, sewing crafts are bound to be a fun and exciting activity.  Not only will your kids enjoy creating something new, but they’ll also be introduced to some basic life skills along the way!
